Despite early concerns over its operations, the new Incheon International Airport, a self-proclaimed "winged city that is more than an airport," had celebrate its one-month anniversary April 29 ,2001 on Sunday without having suffered any major snags. March 29, 2001 was the opening day of the eagerly anticipated new Incheon International Airport, located 32 miles from Seoul and just 9 miles from the port of Incheon. The airport's terminal, which will be the largest passenger terminal building in the world, features a total floor space of nearly 5.5 million square feet and 44 boarding gates. Check-in counters have been arranged around islands, situated 130 feet apart from one another, to reduce congestion and to allow greater flexibility during high traffic flow. A total of 272 check-in counters can accommodate 6,400 passengers per hour. .The approximate travel time between the airport and the Seoul city center is 50 minutes, which only reflects an increase of 5-10 minutes over the average commute time from Gimpo Airport. All international Korean Air flights to and from Seoul will arrive in and depart from Incheon instead of Gimpo Airport. Gimpo Airport will be used for Korea domestic flights only. This new Incheon International Airport (IIA) opened recently is set to act as the major gateway to Korea and all of Northeastern Asia. With a combination of Korea's traditional culture and state-of-the-art technology, the new airport reflects the image of Koreans reaching out to the world and welcoming their neighbors to Korea. The Transportation Center is the central transportation facility of the airport, a departure and an arrival point for international exchanges. It covers 76,000 pyeong (1 pyeong= 3.3 sq. meters), and includes Passenger Terminal 1, short term parking for passenger cars, and a railway platform (to be completed in 2005).
