Kuala Lumpur

National Monument

Tugu Negara (in the Malay language) was constructed in 1966 in honor of the nation's fallen heroes. The 15.54 meter high bronze statuary depicts seven men from the Malayan Security Forces symbolizing the seven qualities of leadership. A moat, filled with fountains and ornamental water-lilies, surround the entire structure.

Dayabumi

The Dayabumi Complex is an interesting combination of Arabic and modern high-rise architecture. It was labeled the most expensive building ever constructed in Malaysia when it was finished in 1985. The combination of government offices and a shopping center also features the new Central Post Office. For an elevated view of the city, take a ride up to the building's 30th floor.

National Planetarium

One of the newer attractions in the city, the National Planetarium is located at the Lake Gardens near the Parliament House. It was officially opened by Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in 1994. Its role is to generate interest and promote awareness of space science. Attractions at the Planetarium include the Space Theatre that screens two movies daily, the Space Science Show, and the Sky Movie.

Istana Negara

Meaning Royal Palace, Istana Negara is the official residence of the King. It is located on a hillock at Jalan Istana. The formal grounds is enhanced by immaculate lawns and formal gardens ablaze with blooms. A lily filled pond contributes to a serene atmosphere. The palace also serves as an official venue for functions and ceremonies. On special occasions of national significance, the palace is transformed into a fairytale land of glittering lights.

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

This is the oldest Hindu temple in the city. Located at Jalan Bandar, it is 'wildly' decorative and was built in 1873. Note the "Raja Gopuram" or elaborate tower decorated by ornate sculptures of scenes from Hindu mythology. Step inside to see Hindu worshipers offering prayers to the four-armed goddess.
