South Side Back

Deep Water Bay

Beyond Aberdeen and Ocean Park is the Deep Water Bay beach, which has some amazing mansions. A nine-hole golf course managed by the Hong Kong Golf Club is open to the public on weekdays. A slightly more exclusive club is the Hong Kong Country Club, which is only available to members and their guests. The beach is a great place for swimming or a quiet soak in the sun.

Repulse Bay

This is, by far, the most popular place on the south side of Hong Kong Island. The bay is now fully developed into a playground for both tourists and urban residents. The Repulse Bay Hotel, a remarkable resort hotel, once laid here on the beach, but a large pink tenement has now replaced the building with a big square hole in the middle, which is called the Repulse Bay. A number of fine restaurants are featured in the apartment building.

On the waterfront at Repulse Bay, there are a beachside restaurants, hamburger and noodle stands, luxurious high-rises, and a beach that is crowded on weekends. Beyond Repulse Bay are two serene beaches: Middle Bay and South Bay. These bays are popular with the more serious beach goers who are eager to tan their toned bodies.

Stanley

Stanley Village is about a fifteen minutes drive southwest of Repulse Bay. Being a tourist magnet, the village offers a few interesting sights to delight visitors. The main attraction on Stanley Peninsular is the Stanley Market, which attracts thousands of visitors on weekends. Both locals and visitors search eagerly for good bargains to take home. Slightly further from New Street is a large area with shops selling fashionable clothes, rattan, fresh food, ceramic jugs, budget art, hardware, brass objects, Chinese crafts, and vases. The village is prevalent among Hong Kong's upper crust who come for the excellent restaurants and to escape the crowds in the urban areas.

Tai Tam Reservoir

Tai Tam Reservoir is Hong Kong Island's largest among the other two reservoirs with a storage capacity of 6.2 million cubic meters. However, the reservoir can only comply with Hong Kong's water consumption needs for three days. Most of the region's water supply comes via huge pipes from across the border in China. Surrounding the reservoir are picturesque hills, including the Tai Tam Country Park, a notable picnic and hiking spot.
