Water Activities

Sailing

Fine sailing is available at Bay of Islands, Auckland and Marlborough Sounds. The best months are between October and April when you will find the widest range of sailing boats for one day and longer trips, with or without a skipper. It would cost about NZ$2,000 and NZ$3,000 to charter a fully equipped 12-meter (40-ft) yacht a week, depending on the season. An interesting route would be the 120-nautical-mile coastal cruise along the coast of Auckland into the Bay of Islands. For this cruise, a 10-day minimum charter fee applies. A day's sailing in a group would roughly cost NZ$60 per person.

Windsurfing

Orewa Beach (north of Auckland), Piha Beach (northwest of Auckland), New Plymouth, Makatan Island near Tauranga, and off Gisborne are locations for ideal windsurfing. On the South Island, the wind and waves are superb at Kaikoura, Whites Bay (Blenheim), Pegasus and Sumner Bays near Christchurch, and the bays around the Dunedin and Cape Foulwind (Westport).

Kayaking

A developing activity here is kayaking, which is particularly good in Abel Tasman. Other interesting kayaking areas are Fiordland National Park, Marlborough Sounds, Bay of Islands, Stewart Island, Lake Taupo, Lake Rotorua, and Whanganui River. Kayaks can be rented for guided or independent tours lasting one or more days.

Whale/Dophin watch

At Kaikoura, on the east coast of South Island, you can swim with dolphins and watch the whales play. Huge sperm whales swim barely a kilometer off the coast between April and June, while humpbacks are spotted during June and July and killer whales in summer. To avoid disappointment, it is better to make early bookings.
