Singapore Zoological Garden

The Singapore Zoo has one of the most beautiful settings in the world. The tranquil waters of Seletar Reservoir with a dense secondary forest surround it. It has also been acclaimed as one of the world's most spectacular zoos.

Enjoying an "open zoo" concept, the animals are kept in spacious, landscaped enclosures, separated from visitors by dry or wet moats. The moats are concealed with vegetation or dropped below the line of vision. In the case of dangerous animals, such as leopards and jaguars, which can climb very well, beautifully landscaped glass-fronted enclosures are used. Oppressive cages that typify old zoos are absent. The end result is a feeling of openness.

Spreading over 100 hectares, the Singapore Zoo houses more than 2,000 animals from over 240 species, including 40 from the endangered species list. The zoo's orang utan breeding program has created a large community of these gentle, endangered species. It is also the only zoo in the world where you can enjoy breakfast or tea with an orang utan (extra charges apply). The breeding program has also witnessed the first tropical birth of a polar bear. Other endangered species like the Malayan tiger, the golden tamarin, the cheetah, and the sea lion have also found a haven in the zoo.

A regular tram service that covers the entire zoo offers excellent overviews of the attractions. The commentary provides useful information. However, to fully appreciate the zoo, the tram introduction should be complemented by a walking tour. The zoo is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Getting there : Take SBS Bus 138 from Ang Mo Kio MRT Station or TIBS Bus 927 from Choa Chu Kang MRT Station.
