Traveling
around Myanmar is a bit of a challenge and rather unconventional for those
who are used to comfort traveling. Try to avoid flying, as there are certain
things to be said about its "safety record". Buses are rarely used for
long-distance traveling. This is because the buses tend to be crowded.
In recent
times, pick-up trucks with benches are available. It is possible to charter
them. There is also a daily express train between Yangon and Mandalay.
For a cheap and convenient alternative, try the delightfully ancient buses
in Yangon and Mandalay. There are also interesting forms of transportation
by means of horse carts (in Mandalay) and trishaws. You can find these
just about anywhere, however, do negotiate the fares before jumping on
board.
