      Otherwise
known as Qoomolangma and standing at 8,848 meters, Mount Everest
is itself a point of pilgrimage for mountaineers from all around the world.
About 27,000 square kilometers around the Tibetan face of Everest has
been gazetted by the Chinese government as the Qoomolangma Nature Preserve
in an effort to protect the environmental and cultural riches of the region.
Of course not everyone plans on making it to the top and would be satisfied
with a trip to the Everest Base Camp with two access points at Shegar
and Tingri. One can either make it to the Base Camp by making a
strenuous trek or by resorting to 4WD vehicles. Watch out for altitude
        sickness.
      Besides Mount
Everest, there are several other peaks in Tibet like Luozi, Makalu,
Zhuoayou, Xixiabangma and Nanjiabawa, which soar
above the clouds and stand sentinel over this exotic land. Mount Kailash
is considered one of the most sacred mountains by Buddhists and Hindus
alike. The Buddhists believe it to be the axis of Mount Sumeru,
the central mountain amidst the ancient four-continent concept of the
world. Hindus believe Mount Kailash to be the throne of Shiva.
