Kozu-Shima Island An extinct volcano, Mt Tenjo, dominates Kozu-shima Island, and other attractions such as beaches, the Tokyo-ji Temple, and a cemetery for former exiles are also located on this island. Accommodations are available; hence staying over should pose no problems. To reach the island, visitors can take the ferry from Tokyo's Takeshiba Pier (¥5890 2nd class), or from Shimoda on the Izu-hanto Peninsula (3 hours 40 minutes, ¥3100 2nd class). Miyake-Jima Island With over 200 species of birds, it is no wonder that Miyake-jima Island is also known as Bird Island. The island is 180km south of Tokyo and is the third largest of the seven islands, with a circumference of 36km. On the island are a number of good beaches, a few small lakes, and a volcano that last erupted in 1962. Visitors can explore the island by rented cars or bicycles, or by the local bus. Accommodations are available but camping is allowed on Sagiga-hama, Okubo-hama, and Miike-hama beaches, although equipment is not provided. Air flights are available from Tokyo via Air Nippon (¥9450), or one can choose to take the ferry service from Tokyo (¥6230 2nd class). Hachijo-Jima Island Located 290km south of Tokyo, Hachijo-jima Island is the southernmost and second largest of the seven islands. At 68 sq. km, it has a pleasant, semi-tropical climate, and is becoming increasingly popular amongst the younger Japanese. Interesting sights include the dormant volcano, numerous good beaches, a botanical garden, Tametomo-jinja Shrine, and Sofuku-ji Temple. A local custom, which takes place in the form of bullfighting, is now considered a tourist attraction. The fight can only be found throughout Asia where two bulls try to push each other out of a ring. Bullfights are held daily at Jiyugaoka. The Exile Festival, or Runin Matsuri, with its costumed procession, drum beating, and folk dancing, is also held here from August 28-30. Car and bicycle rentals are available to help ease traveling within the island. Visitors can take the ferry from Tokyo via Miyake-jima Island (10½ hours, ¥7800 2nd class), or the air service from Haneda airport via Air Nippon (1 hour, ¥12,650 one way).
