Until
1868, the Kansai region was Japan's cultural and political centre. The
area is richly blessed with historical sites. The Kansai region is comprised
of the Shiga, Mie, Nara, Kyoto, Waka-yama, Osaka, Kobe, and Hyogo prefectures.
This region sees an increase in the number of long-term foreign residents,
and its local dialect, Kansai-ben, has begun to gain more attention from
foreign students. The region has also become the first stop for visitors
to Japan with the opening of Kansai International Airport - Japan's first
24 hour airport - in 1994. It is almost always on the top list of tourists'
itineraries when visiting Japan.
