Situated
on the Qingzang (Qinghai-Tibet) Plateau of China, this southwestern province
is known to the Chinese as Xizang. Like the frontier province that it
is, the land can be a harsh and unforgiving mistress yet offer a tender
side. Most importantly, this is a landscape of colors. It is a majestic
land of ochre brown landscapes with wide expanses of rock and gravel where
little can grow except the wonder of it all. Virgin-white snow-capped
peaks rub shoulders with lazy clouds that cast their lumbering shadows
on the land below, azure lakes run deep, clutching their secrets closely,
and people and buildings are decked in the most vibrant colors. This is
Shangri-La; this is the Land of Snows; this is the Roof of the World.
