Clarke
Quay is located along the Singapore River. A place to shop, sightsee,
and eat, there are 176 air-conditioned shops in godowns and shophouses
that were restored and are now selling clothes and souvenirs. Pushcarts
selling unique pottery, jewelry, and woodcraft knick-knacks add to the
friendly festive atmosphere.
Located
behind soaring skyscrapers of Singapore's financial district, Chinatown
is a network of streets and alleyways that has hardly changed over the
decades. Like their ancestors, Chinese merchants conduct businesses from
the ground floor of quaint pre-war shophouses. Narrow alleyways present
herbal medicine merchants who mix herbs, spices, and other ingredients
into potions for whatever ailments you may have. One can even see traditional
Chinese delicacies, such as sea cucumbers lying on the street to dry!
Apart from the traditional shops, Chinatown also offers a few modern shopping
complexes. Chinatown Point, People's Park Complex, Chinatown Plaza, and
Chinatown Complex all offer good bargains. They also carry most things,
from electronic goods to luggage to textiles to clothes and cosmetics.
