Arab
Street
Arab
Street's bazaar-style shopping has always been an interesting factor for
visitors from all over the world. One can browse through hole-in-the-wall
shops, enjoy the haggling, and yet leave with the most delightful purchases
at bargain prices. Many shops reflect the Muslim influence. They sell
Muslim prayer rugs, skull-caps, and anything needed by the faithful making
the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. Baskets and other cane, straw, rattan,
and pandan leaf goods are sold here. These shops also supply interesting
camel skin bags, pith helmets, and other items such as miniature sewing
kits, which make ideal souvenir gifts. The real attraction of Arab Street
is the textiles. Bales of cotton, georgette, chiffon, silk, and other
luxurious fabrics throng the pavements, waiting for customers to buy them
at unbeatable prices. Arab Street is also popular for its wide range of
genuine batik, which are brought in from neighboring countries, namely
Malaysia and Indonesia. There are a number of fishing tackle shops, which
carry a remarkable number of items for both amateur and professional angler.
Goldsmiths and scent shops selling attar of roses, jasmine, sandalwood,
and others tend to cluster at one corner. Southeast Asian crafts are also
sold here.

Housing
Estates
 Singapore's
housing developments are places where visitors will find some of the best
bargains. These suburban shops offer a surprisingly comprehensive range
of items from branded clothes to electronic goods at bargain prices. Try
Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Clementi, Toa Payoh, and Geylang, which are all accessible
by the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit). Some of the housing estates do have shopping
malls. Such examples include Tampines, Bishan, Yishun, and Woodlands.
