Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)

Founded in 1368 by Zhu Yuanzhang, the Ming Dynasty developed Nanjing as the capital. In 1402, however, Yongle, the second Ming emperor, built a new capital in today's modern Beijing. In 1420, Beijing was officially the first capital and Nanjing then became the second capital.

Under the Ming Dynasty, China developed into a strong maritime nation. The Grand Canal was also expanded to its farthest limit, thus further facilitating domestic trade.

The Dynasty finally collapsed in 1644 due to long wars with the Mongolians, incursions by the Japanese into Korea, as well as attacks on the Chinese coastal cities by the Japanese.
