Song Dynasty (960-1279)

After the fall of the Tangs, the country was once again disunited until the Song Dynasty took over. Established in 960, the Song Dynasty was divided into Northern Song and Southern Song. This was an era of technological, economical, and cultural advancement. The most notable contributions are the invention of the printing press and the advancement of agricultural systems and technology. The improvement of transportation as well as the introduction of paper money facilitated the economy further and saw to the establishment of urban cities and international trade.

Despite improving economy and technology, the military and defense were somewhat neglected. Barbarians thus conquered the northern half of China in the early 1100s. In 1211, Mongolian Genghis Khan and his new national entity, the 'Blue Mongols', penetrated the Great Wall and successfully took over Beijing.
