What to Buy l Where to Shop

What to Buy Back

Youth Culture

The city's youth culture is fast developing and specific shops can be found to cater to their demands. These cool, funky, hip, fresh, and alternative youths often strive for the latest and trendiest items. In Hong Kong, one will be able to find all the latest paraphernalia, such as books, clothing, fashion accessories, and music.

Where:

International-chain music stores in Causeway Bay and Tsim Tsa Tsui offer popular sounds from around the world
Unconventional fashion is in vogue at Beverley Commercial Centre, Kimberley Road in Tsim Tsa Tsui, and on Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mong Kok.

Outlet Shopping

Outlets and warehouses are often popular stops for shoppers who like expensive and branded items but are not willing to pay much for them. Many of these outlets buy overruns and 'unsymmetrical' items from factories where international brands such as Emanuel Ungaro and Donna Karan are made. The outlets then sell these items at wholesale prices. Local designers also have their own warehouses where they offer outfits from collections that are only a season or two old.

Where:

The Factory Outlets for Locally Made Fashion & Jewellery handout is available free at HKTA Information and Gift Centres
Pedder Building in Central offers European fashions at good prices
Li Yuen Streets East and West off Queen's Road in Central have great bargains
Granville Road in Tsim Tsa Tsui and Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok sell casual shirts, jackets, and sweaters
Hung Hom is famous for its Diane Freis outlet
Ap Lei Chau offers upscale fashion warehouse outlets.

Market Shopping

Shopping in Hong Kong's busy street markets can be great fun, as well as a real cultural experience. Specialty markets, which sell flowers, birds, and ladies' garments, are available. Other markets that sell just about anything are also full of surprises and great bargains. Try not to miss the city's wet markets, which sell fruit, meat, and vegetables, along with makeshift stalls and carts that bulge with sportswear, accessories, and watches.

Where:

Markets on Li Yuen Streets East and West in Central and Jardine's Crescent in Causeway Bay are good for discounted fashion wear
Ladies' Market in Mong Kok is known for inexpensive fashion
Temple Street Night Market comes alive after 2 p.m., selling clothes, electronics, T-shirts, and more
Stanley Market on the south side of Hong Kong Island sells silk goods, souvenirs, and T-shirts. It opens from approximately 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
