Minibuses / Maxicabs When compared to buses, minibuses and maxicabs are more efficient as they are faster. These are 16-passenger, cream-colored, fully air-conditioned vans differentiated by red or green stripes. These vans are better for short trips around town or traveling to outer areas. Like regular buses, drivers speak very little English. Minibuses are in red stripes and are similar to maxicabs. Routes are not always fixed, and passengers may board or alight anywhere - except in restricted zones - simply by alerting the driver. Fares start from HK$2 - $20, and is paid when getting off. Maxicabs, in green stripes, follow specific routes with fixed fares. A sign in front will show the destination of each maxicab. Fares range from HK$1.50 to HK$18, and are paid upon boarding, thus exact change is necessary. Hong Kong Tramways Since 1904, Hong Kong's double-decker trams have been functioning, linking Kennedy Town in the east to Shau Kei Wan along the harbor side of the island. These trams are reasonably charged at a flat fee of HK$2 per adult and HK$1 for kids. The trams run from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., offering one of the best views in town. However, avoid rush hours if possible. For more information, contact 2559 8918. Private trams with an open-top, brass fittings, and front and rear balconies can be rented. For private trams inquiries, call 2118 6241. Taxis Taxis are abundant in Hong Kong. Most citizens utilize the taxi services in Hong Kong, as it is very expensive to own cars. Different colored taxis are found in different districts. Red taxis are prevalent on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, green in the New Territories, and blue on Lantau Island. All taxis sojourn at the Chek Lap Kok airport and taxi fares are comparatively low. When taking a taxi, it is best that you have your choice of destination written in Chinese, as some drivers do not speak English. Look for taxi zones and be sure to stay in queue when hailing a taxi. Hong Kong taxi drivers are reputed to be rude and unfriendly, though it would be unfair to stereotype all drivers based on a few experiences. If you have queries or complaints, simply record the taxi's number and call the 24 hour police hotline at 2527 7177. The driver's name and car number are displayed on the dashboard. Receipts are available upon request. For lost property, call the Taxi Union Loss Report Service at 2385 8288. A small service charge will be incurred.
