Peak Tram The peak tram was built and has been operating since 1888. The authentically restored cable railway climbs the 373m to Peak Terminus in eight minutes, bringing to visitors Hong Kong's most spectacular lookout point. The daily tram runs from 7 a.m. to midnight at 10 minute intervals, at a charge of HK$18 (HK$28 return) for adults and HK$5 (HK$8 return) for children under 12. A free shuttle bus brings visitors from the Star Ferry Terminal in Central to the tram's Lower Terminus every 20 minutes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays, and at 10 to 25 minute intervals from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays and public holidays. For inquiries, call 2522 0922. Car Hire Rental cars are not often used, as there are sufficient public transportation around the country. Nevertheless, chauffeur-driven cars are available and can be rented by the hour or by day. A valid foreign driver's license allows visitors to drive in Hong Kong for up to 12 months without applying for a local license. Remember to carry all necessary documents when driving. Ferries The Star Ferry, Hong Kong's most scenic mode of travel across Victoria Harbour, is inexpensive and frequently available. An eight minute ride between Central and Tsim Tsa Tsui costs only HK$2.20 for the upper deck or HK$1.70 for the lower. From Central to Hung Hom, it costs HK$2.70 for the upper deck and HK$2.20 for the lower, and from Tsim Tsa Tsui to Wan Chai, it will cost HK$2.20. Other ferry services are available to Lantau, Lamma, Cheung Chau, and Peng Chau. To get more information, call the Star Ferry Co. at 2366 2576 or the Hongkong & Yaumati Ferry Co. Ltd. at 2542 3081. Helicopter There are helicopter companies that do provide charter services if you wish to get an overview of Hong Kong. A whole aircraft must be chartered for at least 30 minutes. Aerial tours of Hong Kong Island and other areas can be arranged and costs HK$5,440 or HK$7,470 per half hour. Both Heliservices (HK) Ltd. (2802 0200) and Helicopters Hong Kong Ltd. (2573 8882) offer air and land services for sightseers. Rickshaw Riding Rickshaws are a traditional mode of transportation back in the past centuries. They can now be found only around the Star Ferry in Central District on Hong Kong Island. Rickshaws are pulled by old men and will only go short distances. The drivers will always oblige to pose with visitors for photo taking sessions. Rickshaws are attractions among the tourists but do negotiate the price first before getting onto the vehicle, as some drivers may overcharge the naïve tourist.
