Geography l History l Economy

Surrounding Myanmar is Thailand, Laos, China, India and Bangladesh. On its southern tip are the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Central Myanmar consists of wide rivers and large plains. The main river is known as Ayeyarwady (formerly spelt as Irrawaddy). You can navigate through its 1600-kilometers length. Towards the east, you'll see mountains along the Thai border and to the north is the eastern end of the Himalayan range. Myanmar's highest peak is on the Myanmar-Tiber border. It is known as Hkakabo Razi. Its height is 5881 meters or 19,290 ft. This is the highest peak in Southeast Asia.

Practically half of Myanmar is covered by forest with about 15% of its land cultivated. Rice is planted there. Burma used to be the world's largest exporter of rice however exports have decreased considerably. Majority of the population is into agriculture with less than 10% in manufacturing.

Season wise, there are 3 main seasons in Myanmar. They are mainly the cool and dry winter from November to February. The extreme hot summer from March to May and the wet and humid monsoon season from May to October.
