from its alpine ranges and succulent forests, Taiwan's two largest lakes,
Wushantou (Coral Lake) and Tsengwen Reservoir, are en route from Chiayi
to Tainan. Both lakes are situated close to each other, but to get from
one to another would require you to drive down a windy road spanning 30km
through pastoral landscape.
Wushantou is named
Coral Lake due to the fact that its narrow pointing inlets, which probe
into the surrounding hills, result in the lake appearing like a chunk
of coral. Swimming is not allowed, as the lake is a source of drinking
water to the region. Fishing and boating facilities are available for
rent, and many visitors often engage in a boat tour that visits several
islands, Paotzuliao Suspension Bridge, and Hsikou Tunnel. Visitors can
choose to stay at one of the many hotels and inns that are available near
the lake.
Tsengwen Reservoir,
completed in 1971, is Taiwan's largest inland lake. It measures 44 sq.
km (17 sq. ft) and attracts both boaters and hikers. Tsengwen is about
60km northeast of Tainan via highways 20 and 3. A few tropical fruit plantations
at the lake offer scrumptious fresh food at this resort. Accommodation
is offered at the Tsengwen Youth Activities Center.
