Long
gone are the days when Buddhism was only practiced in Asian countries.
Today, Buddhism has spread throughout the world. One can even find Thai
Buddhist temples in America and the United Kingdom. Thailand's temples
are not only visited by local Thais but also by local Caucasians, many
of whom are very interested in Buddhism when they visit Thailand.
Meditation is an
aspect of Buddhism that is very popular and is often practiced by the
Thais and monks to achieve self-harmony and happiness. Here in Thailand,
visitors can also appreciate and learn the basics of meditation at some
of the meditation centers around Bangkok and others located around the
country.
Suan Mok, a 120 acre
forest temple located in Chaiya district, Surat Thani province, which
is approximately 850km south of Bangkok, attracts and accepts meditators
from all over the world. Meditation opportunities are also found in Bangkok,
particularly at Wat Mahathat (facing Sanam Luang), Wat Pak Nam, Wat Chonprathan
Rangsit, Wat Phrathammakai, and Banglamphu's Wat Bowon Nivet where English
language instruction is available.
