- A Shopper’s paradise - SERIKIN, a town located on
the Sarawak – Indonesia border, is a favourite
destination for shoppers, especially very popular for
those from Peninsula Malaysia and among our locals
here.
Situated in the Bau district, not far from Tasik Biru, it
takes approximately 1 ½ hours to reach this town by
road from Kuching city. On both sides of the road
leading to Serikin, one can see vast tracts of empty
land alternating with swathes of green jungle, as well
as the homes of people from the Iban and Bidayuh
communities. A small roadside police post indicates
the arrival in Serikin.
Stalls in Serikin only operate during the weekends, on
every Saturdays & Sundays. Most of the products sold
here are from Indonesia. The main attraction is the
ability to bargain freely. The goods are neatly
arranged within and outside the stalls that stretch up
to two kilometers. And one can hunt for different
types of merchandise such as the handicrafts, mats,
rottan products, clothing, various type of textiles like
batik, kain songkek and kebaya fittings with unique
embroidery, woodcarving, handmade potteries,
weaving, and crystals, memorabilia made from glass
and storage containers and other endless items. You
can find stalls selling keropok. (various type of
cracker made from local fruit)
