Melbourne

Melbourne lives for the serious shopper especially for those serious about fashion. A fashion center since the 19th Century, Melbourne continues to maintain its standards, providing class service to customers.

The main departmental stores are Myer Melbourne, a full two blocks of the city center, David Jones, and Daimaru, a recent addition to its department stores. Specialty stores and boutiques can be found in the Galleria Shopping Plaza. Located on Collins Street are Australia on Collins, Block Arcade, and the Sportsgirl Centre. Australia on Collins comprises 60 shops on five levels, with fashion, homeware, and other retail stores. The Sportsgirl Centre and the Block Arcade concentrates on fashion design shops with the latter having a significant historic interest. In between Bourke Street Mall and Little Collins Street is The Walk Arcade, housing a small selection of smart and exclusive boutiques.

Another main complex in the city is Centrepoint Shopping Centre with 47 shops on four levels. Melbourne Central, running between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street has 180 shops spread throughout six levels. All are housed in a glass-coned tower building.

Melbourne also has a number of colorful and vibrant markets including the famous Queen Victoria Market, Sunday arts and crafts market at Collins Place and the Victorian Arts Centre, which is a second-hand goods market held each Sunday in the southeastern suburb of Camberwell. A popular arts and crafts market is also held on Sundays at the Upper St Kilda Esplanade.

Most merchants open seven days a week. Standard hours are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., although some retailers open longer with extended hours on Thursdays and Fridays. Most shops will be closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday.
