Kukuan Kukuan is a small village on the western half of the central range. It is distinguished for its hot spring resorts lying at 1,000 meters above sea level. There are many hotels and inns with restaurants and shops to cater to the demands of tourist who flock to Kukuan frequently. A river bends over a boulder-strewn riverbed, passing right through the village. Hotel bathrooms supply hot mineral water directly from the taps. However, there are no public communal pools for everyone to take pleasure from. Soaking in the mildly hot water from the springs can be rather relaxing and therapeutically beneficial. Mineral water is not the only attraction Kukuan has to offer. The major tourist spot here is the Dragon Valley, which is about a 2km walk from the town. To go to the valley, one must first cross a suspension bridge over the river before reaching a path that leads to the valley. Along the path is a cave-pen for Himalayan black bears, a big cage of acrobatic monkeys, a pair of Manchurian cranes, and other outdoor zoo creatures. Proceeding from there, you will pass the Mahjong Terrace of Eight Immortals and the Goddess of Mercy Grotto, a shrine set in a crook of a gorge. There are numerous Kuanyin temples around Taiwan. Here, the deity is in a meditation position, sitting calmly on an edge that stands from the rocky surface of the gorge across the river. An altar is placed below her for worshippers to burn incense. Another place of interest is the Dragon Valley Fall that cascades 75 meters down into the stream. The fall is always raining with a fine mist created by the upward deflection of the waterfall's force by the pool at its feet. This is the easiest reachable fall among Taiwan's major waterfalls. Lishan On the peak of the Central Range, near the Central Cross-Island's Highway midpoint, is Lishan or Pear Mountain. From Kukuan, it would take two hours by car to reach Lishan. Several restaurants and lodges occupy this mountain amidst alpine breezes and drifting mists. The main tourist accommodation here is the Lishan Guest House, which is an alp-like rendition of Taipei's infamous Grand Hotel. Best months to visit Lishan would be between February and April, when the apple, pear, and peach trees blossom.
