Martyrs' Shrine

The Martyrs' Shrine in Hualien is built into a hillside on the northern outskirts. It is a remarkable building with impressive architectural styles that reflects aesthetic Chinese concepts of balance and proportion.

Carp Lake

Thirty minutes drive by car southwest of the city is Hualien's favorite recreational resort known as Carp Lake. This fish-shaped reservoir lies amidst tropical-fruit plantations at the foothills of the Central Range. In the month of June, the lake becomes host to colorful dragon-boat races. During normal periods, boating and fishing is an activity that is popular here. However, fishing gears are not available for rent, and you must therefore bring your own. Huge carps roam the waters of this lake and those who manage to catch them may have it cooked at one of the bountiful restaurants on the roadside.

Taroko Gorge

Taroko Gorge is a feature of the Taroko National Park. The world-class beauty of sheer marble, which rises up from the Liwu River, is a popular retreat among tourists. Visitors can get there by car, cab, or bus, following the route from Hualien heading north 15km for Hsincheng and cutting through westward directly to the gorge.

The national park is much more than just a gorge. It also features several mountain peaks over 3,000 meters above sea level that comes with an array of waterfalls, snow-covered slopes, and virgin forests. Swallow's Grotto, Tunnel of Nine Turns, and Tienhsiang are some of the attractions along Taroko Gorge. A hot spring, known to locals as Wenshan Hot Springs, comes to live in the park. Taroko Park is the home to one of Taiwan's indigenous people called the Atayal. Their way of life is presented by a multimedia presentation at an interpretive center at Pulowan.
