Hsinle Street Hsinle Street runs parallel to Wufu Road, between Love River and the harbor area. Those of you who enjoy window-shopping should spend some time walking the street as there are many unique Chinese shops and local markets that dwell here. Nautical artifacts, books, pharmaceutical medicines, and more can be found in this area. One of Taiwan's largest departmental stores is on Wufu 3rd Road, near Chungshan Road, next to Central Park. Chengching Lake Said to be similar to that of Hangzhou's famous West Lake on the Chinese mainland, Chengching (Purity) Lake is a 25-minute drive north of downtown Kaohsiung. A tree-lined promenade leads to the Ming-style arch entrance of the lake's park. A fee has to be paid, which gives access to a seven-kilometer-long road sweeping the perimeter of the lake. The main attraction here is the Restoration Pagoda. Others are the islands, towers, bridges, pavilions, an orchid collection, and an aquarium. The more active can try boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, golf, or swimming. It is definitely worthwhile spending a day-trip at the lake. Spring and Autumn Pavilion ; Dragon and Tiger Pagodas Thirty-minutes north of Kaohsiung is the Spring and Autumn Pavilion, which is connected to the south shore of the Lotus Lake by a causeway. The entrance of the pavilion is an enticing jaw of a life-sized dragon sculpture. Next to the pavilion lie the twin, seven-tiered Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, which also floats on the water. They are joined to shore by a nine-corner bridge. A Taoist temple devoted to Kuan Kung is located opposite the pagodas. Fokuang Shan About an hour's drive northeast of Kaohsiung is the Fokuang Shan in lush rolling hills. The place is also named the Light of Buddha Mountain and is a center of Buddha scholarship in Taiwan. Several shrine halls surrounded by cool colonnades, pavilions, pagodas, bridges, footpaths, libraries, meditation halls, ponds, grottoes, and refined Buddhist statuary complete the Fokuang Shan. Adjacent to the entrance stands the tallest Buddha image on the island at the height of 32m (105 ft) tall, and is surrounded by 480 life-sized images of his disciples. There are two main shrine halls known as the Precious Hall of Great Heroes and the Hall of Great pity. Both halls are awe inspiring with wondrous architectural styles and intricate ornaments of holy values.
