The
primary attraction in Osaka is this castle, which is, unfortunately, a
1931 reproduction of the original. The castle, well-noted for its massive
stone walls, commands an extensive view of Osaka City and its surrounding
environment. It also houses several historical art objects and documents
related to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, as well as old Osaka. The castle is open
daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is ¥500.
The entrance of the
castle, the Ote-mon Gate, is a 10 minute walk northeast from Tanimachi-yonchome
station on the Chuo and Tanimachi subway lines. Or, take the JR Osaka
Loop Line (Kanjo-sen), which circles the city, and alight at Morinomiya
station.
Shitenno-ji
Temple
Founded
in 593, the Shitenno-ji Temple is actually one of the oldest Buddhist
temples in Japan, although none of its present buildings are originals.
The present structure was rebuilt only after the war. Built in 1294, the
stone torii gate at the entrance is the oldest of its kind in Japan. The
temple opens daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached via Shitennoji-mae
station on the Tanimachi subway line.
Tennoji-koen
Park
Located approximately 10
minutes away from the Shitenno-ji Temple, the Tennoji Park is a cultural
and recreational centre. It is also the site of the Municipal Art Museum,
Municipal Zoological Gardens, and other cultural and sports facilities.
The park opens daily, except on Mondays, from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. during
the months of July and August. It closes at 5 p.m. the rest of the year.
The park is accessible from the Tennoji station on the JR Osaka Loop Line.
Sumiyoshi
Taisha Shrine
Dedicated
to Shinto deities associated with both the sea and sea travel, the Sumiyoshi
Shrine is a popular shrine in Osaka. A few buildings of this shrine date
back to 1810, thus offering visitors the chance to see the influence of
Chinese Buddhist architectural styles. An interesting feature of this
shrine is its roof, which is made of thatch instead of tiles. The shrine
also showcases more than 700 stone lanterns donated by seafarers and ship
owners, a stone stage for performances of bugaku and court dancing, and
the attractive Taiko-bashi Bridge, which is an arched bridge surrounded
by parks. The shrine is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission
is free. It is located next to the Sumiyoshi-taisha station on the Nankai
line, as well as the Sumiyoshi-tori-mae station on the Hankai line.
