Mid-Range Restaurants

In the Philippines, it is not always true that good food means expensive food. Similar to the saying that 'good things come in small packages', delicious food is often accompanied with an equally reasonable price.

With the Filipinos' eagerness to share their food with family and friends, many mid-range restaurants were established over the years in answer to the needs of diners for an inexpensive yet decent meal of authentic dishes for a price as low as P100.

In this country, the locals would recommend the Aristocrat, on the corner of Roxas Blvd and San Andres St., Malate for a truly value-for-money meal. Despite the name, Aristocrat is a big, medium-priced restaurant that specializes in true native Filipino dishes.

Another recommended medium-priced restaurant with an extensive menu and branches all over the country would be the Barrio Fiesta on the corner of Arkansas and Maria Orosa Streets, Ermita. This restaurant specializes in crispy pata (crackling) and kare-kare (stew).

Josephine is another popular mid-range seafood restaurant. This restaurant, with its extensive menu, folk dancing and live combo music in the evenings is located on Roxas Blvd in Pasay City and Greenbelt Park, Makati.

Moving away from the Filipino food scene, one can also find other mid-range restaurants offering food from other countries around the world. Delicious Chinese food can be found at the Hong Kong Tea House on MH del Pilar St., Ermita. It is a long-established, Cantonese-style Chinese restaurant with yummy noodle soup.

If you're craving for something hot and spicy, do give Kashmir or Sala Thai a try. Kashmir, an Indian restaurant which serves mainly north Indian and Pakistani cuisine is located next to the Kamayan Restaurant while the other Kashmir restaurant is located on General Luna St., Makati. Sala Thai is a popular and inexpensive Thai restaurant located on JM Nakpil St., Malate that serves Thai curries, tom yam and egg rolls.

Apart from the restaurants mentioned, among the many other mid-range restaurants are the Korean Village on Adriatico St., Malate; the Patio Guernica, a Spanish restaurant on JC Bocobo St., Malate; Mario's, a long-established American place on the corner of Legaspi and Dela Rosa Streets, Makati; and Bodhi, a small vegetarian restaurant in the Tutuban Mall, Claro M Recto Ave, Tondo.

Note: For some mid-range restaurants, diners are requested to dress formally but most would allow casual wear. Thongs (flip-flops), shorts and singlets are strictly prohibited.
