An ancient
capital with a history that dates back more than 2,400 years ago, Nanjing
has a number of local arts and crafts that would make meaningful souvenirs.
A capital choice would be the Nanjing Cloud Brocade. Its exquisite name
is derived from the distinguished cloud patterns on the fabric. Records
show that this beautiful material was once presented to the imperial family
for their attire and if you can afford the time and money, it would also
be possible to commission a local tailor to sew you an opulent jacket
with the rich material. While in Nanjing, stroll along Zhongshan Road
where there is a jade factory that has a special type of pebbles named
Rain Flower pebbles. These extraordinary pebbles are gathered by locals
in a nearby creek and resemble jade with tiny flowers imbedded in them;
they make wonderful and reasonably priced souvenirs.
Nanjing is
also home to many outstanding arts and crafts - reproductions of ancient
carvings in wood, ivory and jade, and velvet with cut patterns that are
highly prized as tapestries. Popular streets to explore and discover such
delights in Nanjing are Zhongshan Road, Fuzimiao Quarter, and Gongyuan
Street.
