Beijing l Hangzhou l Huangshan l Nanjing l Shanghai l Suzhou l Tianjin

Apart from being renowned for its beautiful maidens, Suzhou is famous for its silk and embroidery. Other must-buys are sandalwood folding fans, silk fans, wood cut paintings, jade carvings, calligraphy, paintings and silk lingerie. Gifts for friends are easily available here. There are favorite local products worth buying such as green tea, velvet blankets, mooncakes and pine-seed candies. Suzhou has another unique feature - hair embroidery. This is a special technique, which uses human hair to be worked onto a silk backing. There is also kesi, or carved silk, which makes use of a weaving process that mixes raw and boiled silk. Material of this type was once reserved for imperial robes but can now be bought as paintings, scrolls and waistbands.
