Christchurch is a laid-back, garden city and many artists and craftspeople have moved here. The theater and concert scene is very diverse, and events are listed in the Christchurch's Visitor Guide (What's On Guide) published by Canterbury Tourism Council. Also, the Press newspaper does write-ups on current arts events.
Known to be New Zealand's leading theater, the Court Theatre features a small but high-quality ensemble and guest actors from Britain playing middle-of-the-road modern drama. Other performances are presented at the Southern Ballet and Dance Theatre and Theater Royal.

Adjacent to the casino is the modern Convention Centre, which plays host to major musical events ranging from classical to pop. It is also the headquarters of a leading nationwide theater and concert ticket agency. Credit card bookings are available.
During weekends, most pubs feature live bands, some of which are excellent. Pubs in the center include Dux de Lux, The Club, and Trader MacKendrys Tavern. The Edge offers a large modern bar and has bands playing on most days. The Southern Blues Bar offers good rhythm and blues.
