The capital city of New Zealand is the real city of culture. There are three repertory theaters, a wide range of musical events, and the famous International Festival of Arts. Every year-end, the New Zealand School of Dance and the New Zealand Drama School, Toi Whakari, hold performances at various venues.

Wellington's 'new theater' features performances by lesser-known works. Bookings can be made at short notice.

Circa Theatre

The theater is managed by actors and offers a stimulating range of drama in a waterside location by the new National Museum.

Downstage Theater

Offers a variety of plays from Shakespeare to modern authors, as well as performances by the leading Maori theater company, Taki Rua.

Royal New Zealand Ballet Company

This is New Zealand's prime ballet company, which was established 45 years ago. Tickets can be obtained from Ticketek (04-385 0832).

Those with a flair for concerts should drop by the Michael Fowler Centre (MFC). Housed in the attractive Civic Centre, this concert hall is the venue for major musical performances. Information from MFC Ticketing is available at 04-801 4263.

Live pub music is available at Molly Malones. Another good location would be Tatou, which is noted for its good jazz served in smart, modern surroundings.
